Today BMW brought their fleet of 3/4/5/6/X4/X5 vehicles to our local dealer so that volunteers would take their products out on test drives and compare to competitor vehicles. For each test drive, BMW donated $10 to TEAM USA for the Paraolympics. Naturally, I drove the most interesting of the line up, a 2015 SL550 with 102 miles on the clock and damn near every box ticked.

Other vehicles available:

2015 335i MSport Xdrive

2015 550i MSport

2015 X4 2.8si

2015 428i GranCoupe

2015 Mercedes-Benz E350

2015 Lexus NX200t

Overall, the SL has an amazing chassis and was far more composed at highway speed than the 6. The engine is a masterpiece and the constant turbo whine is a reminder that there is always more power available if needed. Its fairly spectacular. The sticker on this car was >125k. The interior blew the BMW out of the water and had far more wizardry and sheer tech than the BMW.

Next up, a 650i Convertible. I didn’t check out the sticker on this car, but it was drop dead gorgeous. The engine was far more entertaining than the SL, but the chassis let this car down in comparison to the SL. The interior was very nice, but didn’t feel as special as the SL.

So this was one of those where they bring along a competitor’s car so you can “see how it’s worse”?

That’s a beautiful SL! Love the brown with Diamond White. As a Mercedes guy, it’s nice hearing how much better it is than the 6-Series.

yeah, but in the GT class, there is only one real option: the SL.

Mercedes’ headlight/grille combos on their recent sports & GT cars bug me. I feel the same way about the SLK and SL in regular and AMG trim, and the AMG GT.

These are not some attractive snoots.

I don’t really like the front end of the AMG GT, but compared to the SLK and SL, it’s almost decent looking.

The 6 is a full-size 4-seater with a cloth top. The SL is a 2-seat roadster flippy hardtop. Also while the 640i convertible and SL400 have similar prices, the SL550 base price is a good $20k more than the 650i convertible, and BMW doesn’t have anything like the SL AMG models.

Still a bit surprising about the chassis on the 650i especially since that one looks like an M-Sport, and that SL doesn’t have Active Body Control.

That’s what I find so funny about when manufacturers bring along competitor’s cars to convince buys that the other product is not as good. It backfires half the time, and when it does the company that initiated the comparison just looks that little bit sillier.
